The traditional Ketubah is written in Aramaic – the common language used at the time the Ketubah was formed.
This version belongs to the Rabbinical Council of America (RCA), and is commonly used by Orthodox Jews (and many Conservative Jews).

Conservative Ketubah Text (Aramaic) + Lieberman Clause
Conservative Jews commonly use the traditional Ketubah text, modified with an additional clause – The Lieberman Clause.
The Lieberman Clause is designed to protect the wife from getting stuck in a marriage (“Agunah”), due to the husband’s inability or unwillingness to grant his wife a ‘get’ (divorce bill).
The added clause states that if the couple files for divorce, they both agree to appear before a designated Beit Din of the Rabbinical Assembly (RA) and of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, who has the authority to settle the divorce as they see fit (even by requiring the husband to grant his wife a ‘get’).

The Hebrew Ketubah text is sometimes used as a supplement to the traditional Ketubah (particularly in Israel).

English Ketubah Text
Like the Hebrew version, the English Ketubah text is used to supplement the Aramaic Ketubah (some couples use it as a replacement).
On the ________ day of the week, the ________ day of the [Hebrew] month of ________, the year ________ after the creation of the world, according to the manner in which we count [dates] here in ________, the bridegroom ________ son of ________ said to this ________ daughter of ________, “Be my wife according to the law of Moses and Israel.
I will work honor, feed and support you in the custom of Jewish men, who work, honor, feed, and support their wives faithfully. I will give you the settlement of ________ silver zuzim, which is due you according to ________ law, as well as your food, clothing, necessities of life, and conjugal needs, according to the universal custom.”
________ agreed, and became his wife. This dowry that she brought from her father’s house, whether in silver, gold, jewelry, clothing, home furnishings, or bedding, ________, our bridegroom, accepts as being worth ________ silver pieces (zekukim).
Our bridegroom, ________ agreed, and of his own accord, added an additional ________ silver pieces (zekukim) paralleling the above. The entire amount is ________ silver pieces (zekukim).
________ our bridegroom made this declaration: “The obligation of this marriage contract (ketubah), this dowry, and this additional amount, I accept upon myself and upon my heirs after me. It can be paid from the entire best part of the property and possessions that I own under all the heavens, whether I own [this property] already, or will own it in the future. [It includes] both mortgageable property and non-mortgageable property. All of it shall be mortgaged and bound as security to pay this marriage contract, this dowry, and this additional amount. [it can be taken] from me, even from the shirt on my back, during my lifetime, and after my lifetime, from this day and forever.”
And the surety for all the obligations of this marriage contract (ketubah), dowry and the additional sum has been assumed by ________ the said groom, with the full obligation dictated by all documents of ketubot and additional sums due every daughter of Israel, executed in accordance with the enactment of our Sages, of blessed memory. It is not to be regarded as an indecisive contractual obligation nor as a stereotyped form.
And we have completed the act of acquisition from ________ son of ________ our bridegroom, to ________ daughter of ________, regarding everything written and stated above, with an article that is fit for such a kinyan. And everything is valid and confirmed.

Reform Ketubah Text
Reform and liberal couples are more lenient when it comes to their Ketubah wording. They modify it, rewrite it, make it more Egalitarian… Some couples even add an emotional touch to it (let’s face it – there isn’t a whole lot of emotion in the traditional Ketubah).
Reform couples use the Ketubah as an opportunity to express their love for one another, share stories, or even add their own wedding vows to it.
As you might expect – there is no “one size fits all” Reform or Reconstructionist Ketubah text that couples just grab “off the shelf”.
That can either be a good thing or a bad thing.
- On the one hand, it gives you the ultimate creative freedom to modify the Ketubah as you see fit
- On the other hand, too much freedom can be paralyzing.
That’s exactly why I included a Reform/Egalitarian Ketubah template. Feel free to modify it as you see fit!

Secular Ketubah Text
Secular and progressive Ketubah texts are even more lenient than Reform Ketubahs.
Most couples who choose a secular Ketubah have no religious affiliation. In many cases, the officiant may not even be Jewish.
Just like Reform couples, secular or interfaith couples sometimes use the original Ketubah as a starting point, or they rewrite their own version completely from scratch.

Celebrating the wedding anniversary with an anniversary Ketubah… who said romance is dead?
Anniversary Ketubahs are a special way to commemorate a special moment. Not only is it a unique Jewish anniversary gift, but it’s also an excellent way to celebrate such a huge milestone and important milestone.
Note: Just to clarify: getting an anniversary Ketubah is not required by Jewish law.
