If you follow Jewish Halacha – It’s not a question of if you should have a Shabbat hot plate in your kitchen, it’s a question of which one you should get

That’s exactly what this guide will help you find out…

Ready? Things are about to get “heated” …

You’re still here… great!

That means you’re willing to dedicate a few minutes in exchange for (hopefully) years of warm, delicious food on Shabbos for you and your entire family.

Smart move!

Now… let’s dive deeper into each Shabbat warming tray and find you the one that will make your Shabbat a delight (just like the Mitzvah says).

NutriChef Portable Electric Food Hot Plate

Top Pick
Nutrichef Portable Electric Food Hot Plate 2

Why Should You Get It?

Nutri Chef really knocked it out of the park with their excellent warming tray…

Not only does it have an elegant, sleek design – but It heats up faster than most hot plates I’ve ever seen… And by heat – I mean heat (aka – NOT burn).

If you’ve ever owned a few hot plates in your lifetime – you probably know by now that SO many hot plates either barely heat up your food or they outright burn your food… there’s no middle ground. And let’s face it – that’s no fun on Shabbos…

Nutri Chef managed to find that middle ground. They finally created a hot plate with the perfect serving temperature (it heats up to 203°F) … and for that I applaud them 👏.

Another cool thing about this electric warming tray is that it’s portable.

You know what that means… Yes – you can now carry your food to the table and keep the food warm while you eat – without having to get up every few minutes for a refill.

Obviously – this isn’t Halachically permitted on Shabbat – but it’s definitely allowed during the rest of the week!

Plus, it’s cheap.

Looks like we have a winner in our hands…

Why Not?

The glass surface is a bit slippery. Depending on the material of your food trays – they might slide across the surface.

Tip: If that happens – place a sheet (silicone or metal) on top of it.

And yes. The chord is pretty short…again.

Who is it For?

Perfect for perfectionists (guilty 🙋🏻‍♂️) who can’t stand the sight of old, rusty items in their kitchen. If it’s going to stand there all day – it might as well be nice to look at.

And of course – the huge surface area can help families with plenty of kids who are eagerly waiting for their Cholent on Shabbos.

Pros

  • Portable
  • Attractive design
  • Heats quickly
  • Perfect temperature – doesn’t burn the food
  • Large surface area
  • Energy efficient

Cons

  • The surface is a little slippery
  • The cord is quite short

Salton Cordless Classic Stainless-Steel Warming Tray

Salton Cordless Classic Stainless Steel Warming Tray

Why Should You Get It?

A cordless Shabbat hot plate? Now there’s something you don’t see every day.

On Shabbat – you can use it as an electric Shabbos warming tray (or as a stovetop blech).

During the rest of the week – you can unplug the cord and carry it with you to the table. It’ll keep your food hot for the entire meal, and look cool at the same time.

Keep in Mind: For obvious reasons – you can’t (or rather, shouldn’t) detach it on Shabbat.

Now that’s what I call a multi-purpose Shabbos hot plate.

If that doesn’t impress your Jewish friends you’re inviting over for dinner – I don’t know what will.

Why Not?

It’s heavy. Really heavy (it friggin’ weighs 16 pounds!).

That might be a strong enough reason right there.

I guess it’s a benefit in a way… your Shabbat blech will stand firm even in a small earthquake.

But if you like your Shabbat warming tray to be mobile (and aren’t as strong as you hope you’d be) – I’d say skip this one.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you…

Who is it For?

Sure… the large surface area is great for large families with lots of mouths to feed. But this isn’t exclusive to this warming plate. There are plenty of other large Shabbat hot plates out there.

What makes this warming plate truly stand out is its cordless functionality… which, ironically, you can only take advantage of during the week  (that is, if you observe the Sabbath).

That allows you to carry your Shabbos tray with you to the table and use it to heat your food during the meal – without having to get up every few minutes to serve your hungry guests.

Tip: This Shabbat hot plate is available in the US, UK, and Canada (just like most of the other hot plates on this list)

Pros

  • Cordless (can detach and be served on the table)
  • Huge surface area
  • Sleek & elegant style
  • Heats up quickly
  • Works great as a Shabbos blech

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Surface area is prone to scratches

Deluxe Glass Buffet Warming Tray Full by Classic Kitchen

Our Favorite
Deluxe Glass Buffet Warming Tray for Shabbat

Why Should You Get It?

Classic Kitchen called their Shabbos warming tray “Deluxe”, and for a good reason.

Not only does it keep your Shabbos food hot and ready to serve, it’s also a very elegant & low profile warming plate.

This impressive blech for Shabbos was made for Sabbath observers in mind:

  • It has a very large surface area, so you’ll pretty much have room for all your delicious prepared meals.
  • The hot plate control is on the back, so it’s not even approachable during Shabbat, therefore avoiding “Shabbat accidents”. Plus, it has a red pilot indicator, to let us know the hot plate is turned on so you won’t forget it.
  • Doesn’t give off a lot of heat, which is good news during the hot summer days 🙂

Why Not?

There’s a downside to large hot plates like Classic Kitchen’s: it tends to be pretty heavy. And indeed – this one’s no exception.

But if you’ve got plenty of kids and family members to feed – then that’s a small price to pay to keep those tummies full and satisfied.

Who is it For?

It’s a great fit for any Jewish kitchen, whether you have a small kitchen or a jumbo-size kitchen, this Shabbos hot plate will definitely fit the bill.

Tip: This Shabbat hot plate is often purchased with a timer to turn it off automatically.

It’s no surprise that this warming tray has gotten so many great reviews, and why it became such a popular Jewish housewarming gift.

Pros

  • Huge surface area
  • Sturdy aluminum sides carry handles
  • Has on/off switch (useful during the rest of the week)
  • Made especially for Sabbath observers

Cons

  • Quite heavy

ISRAHEAT Shabbat Hot Plate

ISRAHEAT Shabbat Hot Plate

Why Should You Get It?

ISRAHEAT’s Shabbos hot plate is quite powerful (maybe even too powerful, if you ask me… more on that later), and a common choice in Jewish households. It heats up your food in around an hour, and enjoy a hot meal as if you cooked it just now.

Tip: There’s also a smaller version, in case you find the large version, well, too large…

Why Not?

Its upside is also a huge downside: it’s a little too powerful. In fact, so powerful that it can burn your food.

But the real turn-off is the lack of warranty. Even though the blech is made in Israel and may well be reliable, I personally don’t like buying kitchen appliances that don’t come with a US warranty… but that’s just me (and hopefully, you too).

Who is it For?

For people looking for a cheap hot plate that does what it’s supposed to do… And don’t mind the lack of warranty.

Pros

  • Heats up quickly
  • Can be used with a timer (purchased separately)
  • Cheap

Cons

  • Gets extremely hot
  • Power cord poorly constructed
  • No warranty

Recommended: What do you do with the rest of the food after Shabbat dinner? You store it in a Sabbath mode refrigerator and enjoy your food for the rest of Shabbos, and for the rest of the week.

NutriChef Electric Warming Tray

Best Value
Nutrichef Electric Warming Tray

Why Should You Get It?

NutriChef returns! With a vengeance! (OK… there’s no vengeance – but hey… if Hollywood can use fancy movie titles, why can’t I?)

Fun fact – NutriChef is the only one with not 1, but 2 warming plates on the list!

And for you cynics out there – no, they didn’t pay me anything under the table (I wish). They just happen to produce excellent hot plates.

Just like NutriChef’s previous warming tray – it’s beautifully designed and heats up in a breeze (pun intended).

It does, however, have a smaller surface area compared to the previous one. But not to worry – it has more than enough room to hold your delicious Cholent, as well as your kid’s favorite dish (is it Shnitzel? Kishke? Pasta? All of the above?).

Why Not?

If you look at the “cons” column and think to yourself: “Geeze, that guy (me) is picky.”

I know, I know… A short cord isn’t exactly a deal-breaker.

But let me tell you… if you’re one of those folks with “challenging” (read: pain-in-the-butt) power outlet locations in your kitchen – you know how annoying this is.

And yes, I suppose I am a little picky (hey! I’m trying to help you find the best Shabbat hot plate! Gimme a break here!)

Who is it For?

This is one of those rare occasions where I would say: It’s for anyone, anywhere, anytime (assuming your power outlets are easily accessible).

It’s beautiful, efficient and durable. I believe all of us would gladly sign up for that.

Pros

  • Heats quickly
  • Perfect temperature – doesn’t burn the food
  • Space efficient
  • Energy efficient (= low power bill – yay!)
  • Very affordable

Cons

  • The cord is quite short

Chefman Electric Warming Tray

Chefman Electric Warming Tray2

Why Should You Get It?

If you ever read some of our other Kosher kitchen appliance guides – you probably heard the name “Chefman” before…

Needless to say – We’re big fans of Chefman’s kitchen appliances here at Amen V’Amen. Soon we might replace the Justin Bieber posters in our office with pictures of Chefman’s hot plates & Shabbos urns (OK, that’s probably pushing it… but you get my point).

Hint: Chefman also won our “Best Value” Shabbat hot water urn award.

Their Shabbat hot plate is no exception.

It’s cheap, it’s safe, and most importantly: it does what it’s supposed to do – which is keep our food warm and our tummies happy.

What about safety…? Safety comes first, right?

Chefman certainly believes so. Their electric warming tray is ETL, SGS & UL certified, so you can sleep well at night without worrying about your kitchen going up in flames in the middle of the night (unlike those horrible stories you hear on the news about hot plates burning down houses).

Note: This doesn’t mean you should put your hands on it or anything like that! This hot plate gets pretty HOT, pretty fast… so keep your little fellas away from it, Bevakasha.

Besides the obvious, Chefman’s Shabbos warming tray has quite a sleek design. It’s made out of cool touch aluminum handles and a black tempered glass cooking surface – making it a piece of cake to clean the pieces of cake.

Why Not?

The food does get a bit too hot if you leave the food on for too long. Just remember to take the food off the warming tray on time so your food doesn’t burn.

Who is it For?

If you’re on a budget, and you’re looking for a high return for your money – Chefman’s electric Shabbat hot plate is an excellent option.

Pros

  • Very Affordable
  • Large surface – able to hold a lot of food
  • High quality – sleek stainless steel design
  • ETL & SGS certified to fit UL safety standards

Cons

  • Food can get a bit too hot
  • The cord is quite short

HotMat Electric Food Warming Tray (Foldable)

HotMat Electric Food Warming Tray

Why Should You Get It?

Innovation doesn’t only happen on our iPhones. This electric Shabbat warming tray is an innovative solution to keeping our food warm and delicious on Shabbat.

How innovative, you ask?

  • The hot plate is foldable (!) – you can store it in a drawer, on a shelf or in your travel bag.
  • Incredibly lightweight, and a huge space saver (a godsend for small kitchens)
  • Ingenious design (it’s patented, actually)

And don’t let the lightweight design fool you – it heats up your food quickly – keeping your Shabbos food warm & delicious.

What can I say, I’m a sucker for innovation, especially when it’s made in Israel.

Why Not?

Rumor has it – that this hot plate doesn’t tend to last that long… especially if you’re using it as your main Shabbos hot plate (hint: that’s the main reason for all those negative reviews).

Now, full disclosure – my girlfriend owns the HotMat, and so far both of are satisfied with it… It may break down on us one day, but so far so good.

Another downside I found with this hot plate is that the surface area is pretty small. Don’t get me wrong – the four trays are super-helpful if you’re heating up multiple items at once. But if you’re planning to heat up larger items like larger pots or serving trays – it becomes a stretch.

Not to mention if If you’ve got lots of mouths to feed – in that case you might find yourself in a bit of a space-pickle (and you may have to feed your kids pickles instead).

Note: I’m actually using mine at the moment when I travel, and so far it’s been working great. But let’s just say that if it stops working one day – I won’t exactly be shocked…

Who is it For?

An ideal solution if you have a small kitchen like mine, or if you like to carry a hot plate for Shabbat or Yom Tov you while you’re traveling.

Again – don’t keep your hopes up for this hot plate to age like fine wine. If you need a reliable Shabbos warming tray – I’m afraid to say – HotMat might fall short.

Pros

  • Lightweight, portable & foldable for convenient storage (and for traveling)
  • Huge space-saver (ideal for small kitchens)
  • Innovative warming solution
  • Sleek design

Cons

  • Doesn’t last as long as other hot plates
  • Small surface area
  • Harder to clean

Most Innovative
Kosher Innovations TechYid Co Shabbos Safe Hot Plate

Why Should You Get It?

If there was an award for the most “famous” Shabbos warming tray, then TechYid’s Kosher hot plate would win, hands down.

Ben Tzion Davis, a Jewish electronic engineer & designer of the hot plate definitely did a remarkable job bringing this fabulous & safe Shabbos hot plate to life.

Did You Know?

It sort of became “Internet famous” on Kickstarter, pledging over $67K to help Jewish families get warm food on Shabbat.

And it definitely lived up to the expectation: TechYid’s innovative hot plate is very safe, efficient & reliable, and should last you for many many years.

You can leave it on for extended use without worrying, and you’ll also save electricity in the process.

This is where HEIS’s huge Shabbat hot plate comes into play.

It comes with a price… and a pretty high one, so take that into account before purchasing this blech.

Top PickNutriChef Portable Electric Food Hot Plate

Nutri Chef is the only one with two representatives on the list (and both of them have won awards!). And for good reason. They managed to “crack the code” of a successful Shabbos hot plate – which contains 5 key elements:

  1. Elegant design ✅
  2. Perfect serving temperature ✅
  3. Fast heating ✅
  4. Durability ✅
  5. Price ✅

NutriChef’s warming tray hit all 5, including the 6th bonus element: a large surface area. And even a 7th element: portability.

To that, I say: “And the Hot Plate Oscar goes to… NutriChef!”

Our Favorite Hot PlateDeluxe Glass Buffet Warming Tray Full by Classic Kitchen

Classic Kitchen’s Shabbat Plata has to be our favorite of the bunch. Why? Because it’s big (real BIG),  study and works like a beast.

It’s an ideal warming tray for if you’re a medium-large sized family with lots of mouths to food on Shabbat. Besides, it’s a popular gift for young Jewish families who are about to set up their new home.

Best ValueNutriChef Electric Warming Tray

We rarely give two awards to the same brand. But when they deserve it, they deserve it… And Nutri Chef certainly deserves it.

This electric warming tray hits the “magic 5” elements of a successful Shabbat hot plate – and it’s even cheaper than the previous one. Sure, it does have a smaller surface area, but that’s a small price to pay, especially since you actually pay less.

Most Innovative Hot PlateKosher Innovations TechYid Co Shabbos Safe Hot Plate

TechYid’s hot plate has won the “Most Innovative Hot Plate” award. Shocking, right? The engineer behind this electric warming tray, Ben Tzion Davis, designed it with a “safety first” approach, and it has the ETL certification (and Kickstarter-fame) to show for it.

“Safety first” is an important mantra to have these days… especially after all these horror stories on the news in the past few years about Shabbat plates burning down houses.

Conclusion

Mmm… the food smells delicious.

Well, now it will also stay warm throughout Shabbos, thanks to your brand new Shabbat hot plate!

“Shabbat Hamalka” (The Shabbat queen) is the day of rest. Lucky for us – little things like Shabbos hot plates and Shabbat hot water urns help turn that into a reality.

So relax, heat up your food on the Shabbat warming tray – and enjoy a peaceful Shabbat!

Shabbat Shalom 🙂

I have the HotMat and am finding the counter (formica) beneath the two Hot plates (not the Warm ones) to be boiling hot to the touch. Have you noticed this? Do you think its a safety issue?

      Hey Chava,

I haven’t noticed it before. But it’s been a while since I’ve used the HotMat, so my memory may be misleading me.

I do know that it has a TUV SUD certification – which means it was tested for safety. But if you’re unsure, or you believe it might be dangerous – try contacting them and see what they have to say (and stop using it in the meantime).

Great article, thanks. We purchased the shefman, which has a glass top and a big sticker saying “do not cover unit, especially with aluminum foil as it can cause the glass to shatter”. Dont you have to have something over the surface for it to be a halachic blech? What can we use?
