  • How do you decorate your table for Rosh Hashanah?
  • How do you give your place a warm, spiritual Rosh Hashanah atmosphere your guests will LOVE?
  • How do you make sure your guests start off their new year with a sweet “apple & honey taste”?

Smartass Answer: Well, you could serve apples & honey 😏”

Haha, very funny (NOT)!

You obviously want, could and WILL do better than that… I guarantee it!

By the time you finish reading this guide, you’ll have everything you need to set the best Rosh Hashanah table in the entire neighborhood…

Sound good?

Great! Let’s get to it then!

Rosh Hashanah Table Setting

Let’s start with setting the table!

Luckily, every Rosh Hashanah dinner table needs a list of traditional food (also known as the “Simanim”), so we don’t have to start from scratch.

Every Rosh Hashanah table requires, at a minimum:

  • Apple & honey
  • Fish (or rather, the fish head)
  • Round Challah
  • Pomegranates
  • Carrots
  • Beets (or Spinach)
  • Black-eyed Peas
  • Leeks
  • Gourds
  • Dates

But believe it or not – that’s barely scratching the surface…

There are TONS of Rosh Hashanah decorations you can add to the table that’ll give it an even greater look.

Here are some of my favorite…

Careful: Do NOT get carried away and get everything I listed below. Instead, pick and choose the ones you like best.

Honey Pot

Spode Judaica Honey Pot

If you’ve ever been to a Passover Seder before, odds are you recognize this famous blue & white ceramic design.

Well, guess what? Spode – the company behind the popular Seder plate – created a ceramic honey pot for Rosh Hashanah with the same signature blue & white design!

Sure, you could just fill a small pot with honey and call it a day. But there’s nothing special about that.

The real (read: Jewish) way to dip an apple in honey is with a real (read: Jewish) honey pot – made especially for Rosh Hashanah.

Glass Rosh Hashanah Seder Plate with Pomegranate Design

Glass Rosh Hashanah Seder Plate With Pomegranate Design

Did you think Seder plates are only a Passover thing? Think again!

Unlike Passover plates, the items on the Rosh Hashanah Seder plate is much more appealing:

  • Apple and honey
  • Pomegranates
  • Dates
  • Beets
  • Leeks
  • Black-eyed peas
  • Fish head

OK, OK… some are more appealing than others (what, you don’t a fish head appealing?)

And what’s up with all the pomegranates, you ask? In Judaism, pomegranates are a symbol of prosperity. That’s why we eat, decorate and give away Pomegranate-themed gifts on Rosh Hashanah.

Tip: It’s also available in Blue/Green and Blue (which is even more impressive than the red one!)

Shana Tova Umetuka Challah Cover

Shana Tova Umetuka Challah Cover

This is a bit less deceiving than the Rosh Hashanah dish.

It looks like a Challah cover… It walks like a Challah cover… It IS a Rosh Hashanah Challah cover!

Now that’s how you do Hamotzi on Rosh Hashanah!

Pomegranates Challah Board

Painted Stainless Steel Challah Board: Pomegranates (Lily Art)

You’ve got a Rosh Hashanah Challah cover. But how do you serve the Challah?

With a Rosh Hashanah Challah board of course!

OK, to be fair, it’s not just for Rosh Hashanah…

The Rosh Hashanah Challah is round…

Round Challah
Original image by Przemysław Wierzbowski

But I personally think getting a round Challah board you’ll only use once a year to be a complete waste. I’d much rather get a Challah board I can use all year round (hint: Sukkot is less than 2 weeks after Rosh Hashanah… use it in your Sukkah!).

Pomegranates Salad Servers

Yair Emanuel Set Of Aluminum Salad Servers Pomegranate

You added a Rosh Hashanah twist to your Challah. Nice job!

Now, how about the salad? Can you “Rosh Hashanify” it too? (adding Pomegranates to your salad doesn’t count)

More challenging indeed… but not impossible!

Boom! Pomegranate salad servers!

What’s next? A Rosh Hashanah salad bowl? (careful, don’t test me)

Yair Emanuel Hand Painted Laser Cut Bowl – Birds and Pomegranates

I told you not to test me 🙂

You just spent hours preparing a fabulous Rosh Hashanah dinner. But what good is it if you can’t serve it on a nice bowl?

Not just some random bowl; but a Rosh Hashanah bowl. A bowl is full of pomegranates, cute birds and flowers.

Now that’s a recipe for a slam-dunk Rosh Hashanah!

Tip: This is a fabulous Rosh Hashanah gift for a hostess, in case you’re invited to Rosh Hashanah dinner.

Pomegranate Blessings Salt & Pepper Shakers

Pomegranate Blessings Salt & Pepper Shakers

Let’s get really creative here…

What else can we “Rosh Hashanize” that nobody has ever thought of?

  • Challah boards? Did that.
  • Challah covers? Did that.
  • Salad servers? What are you crazy? Oh, turns out we did that…

I KNOW I KNOW! How about salt and pepper shakers?

Just kidding… I can’t really take credit for this genius invention. The wonderful Michal Ben Yosef beat me to it and made Rosh Hashanah salt and pepper shakers into a beautiful reality for us “normal folks” to enjoy (who am I kidding, I could never create something like this!).

Rosh Hashanah Honey Dish – Ceramic Plate & Bowl Set

Rosh Hashanah Honey Dish Ceramic Plate & Bowl Set

Somebody tell Spode they have competition. And my oh my what a fierce competitor it is!

This unique Rosh Hashanah honey dish set includes a honey bowl AND a beautiful ceramic square plate – designed after the famous Tree of Life symbol from the Kabbalah.

Now, your hostess can serve both the apples and the honey together, and do it with matching dinnerware!

A beautiful and super-useful gift that will definitely come in handy in the near future (it can be even part of the Sukkah table decoration).

Rosh Hashanah Table Decorations

Honeypots, Challah boards, Challah covers… those are all great Rosh Hashanah table decoration ideas.

But they’re not unexpected. Every Rosh Hashanah holiday table has them… we just added a twist to them.

But the following Rosh Hashanah table settings are NOT expected.

They’re unique…

They’re surprising…

They’re awesome!

Rosh Hashanah Cotton Tablecloth

Rosh Hashanah Cotton Tablecloth

I mentioned all of these table decorations you can put ON the table, that I completely forgot about the basics: the table itself!

Yes! Apparently, you can cover decorate the table itself with this special Rosh Hashanah cotton tablecloth.

It is a bit pricy, so feel free to skip it if you can live without it.

Rosh Hashanah DIY Party Supplies

Rosh Hashanah Diy Party Supplies

Bottles, silverware, napkins…

These are all mundane supplies you’d expect on any Rosh Hashanah dinner.

Question is: how do you turn the mundane into the unforgettable?

Simple: dress them in special Rosh Hashanah “clothing”.

This Rosh Hashanah DIY kit includes dozens of wrappers and stickers that can turn the most ordinary supplies on your table into extraordinary Rosh Hashanah-themed supplies.

We all dress up for Rosh Hashanah… why expect any different from our party supplies?

Rosh Hashanah Coasters

Rosh Hashanah Coasters Set

There’s a lot of drinking going on in Rosh Hashanah. And when there’s a lot of drinking, there’s a lot of spilling.

No need to panic… just use a coaster.

Use a coaster? Nah… too boring.

How about a Rosh Hashanah coaster? Now you’re talking!

Tip: If you’re feeling extra generous – let your guests keep the coasters as a souvenir!

Rosh Hashanah Apple & Honey Confetti

Rosh Hashanah Confetti

Sprinkle some of these apple & honey confetti on the table before the (real) apples & honey arrive. You know, to set the “mood”.

You’re giving your guests something to look forward to :)…

Pomegranate Wine Glass Decoration

Pomegranate Wine Glass Decoration

It’s a Mitzvah to drink wine on Rosh Hashanah (and indeed, wine is poured generously on Rosh Hashanah).

So how about elevating the Mitzvah?

How?

By beautifying it with these cute decorative pomegranates!

Rosh Hashanah Pomegranate Napkin Rings

Rosh Hashanah Pomegranate Napkin Rings

Nappy the Napkin: Hey! How come Winy the wine glass gets a pomegranate? I want a pomegranate too!

Winy the Wine Glass: “Shush Nappy. It’s Rosh Hashanah…No jealousy allowed!”

Nappy the Napkin: “Don’t you tell me to shush! Or I’ll wipe you off the table!”

Boys, boys! Cut it out! Here Nappy, you can have your own Pomegranate napkin rings.

Chag Sameach Place Cards

 Chag Sameach Place Cards

Want to add a personal touch to your holiday table?

Placing Chag Sameach place cards is an easy (and affordable) way to win your guests over. It’s a small gesture, but it goes a long way.

Yair Emanuel Laser-Cut Pomegranate Tree with Birds

Yair Emanuel Laser Cut Pomegranate Tree With Birds Brown

“Rebecca…Why is there a decorative pomegranate tree in the middle of the table?”

Because it’s freakin’ awesome, that’s why!

Besides, it’s small and barely takes up any room, so give me a break!

Rosh Hashanah Centerpiece & Table Decoration Kit

Rosh Hashanah Centerpiece & Table Decoration Kit

It’s hard picking all these Rosh Hashanah decorations one by one, isn’t it?

If only there was a single kit that could take care of all that for us.

Guess what? Christmas Rosh Hashanah came early just in time this year!

This nifty Rosh Hashanah table decorations kit includes:

  • 1 large Rosh Hashanah centerpiece (it folds like an accordion)
  • 2 scalloped centerpieces
  • 12 scalloped table confetti pieces
  • 24 round table confetti pieces

In one word: GENIUS!

Rosh Hashanah Table Centerpieces & Tablescapes

  • … Rosh Hashanah table decorations? Check! ✅
  • … Table setting ideas? Check! ✅
  • … Table centerpieces for Rosh Hashanah? Not check! ❌ (at least not yet)

Let’s change that, shall we?

But don’t think I’m going to choose your centerpieces for you.

Instead, I’ll give you a bunch of Rosh Hashanah centerpiece ideas to choose from… but ultimately, you’ll have to choose what’s best for you!

To quote Morpheus from the Matrix: “I can only show you the door. You’re the one that has to walk through it.”

Clear Blue Skies Bouquet

Clear Blue Skies Bouquet

Flower centerpieces are perfect on Rosh Hashanah… especially when they’re white (and blue).

Why white?

  • White = purity
  • White = positivity
  • White = clarity

And why white and blue? I’ll let you figure that one out on your own… (hint: 🇮🇱)

If there was ever a bouquet made for Rosh Hashanah – I believe this is it.

Tip: Check out my Rosh Hashanah flowers guide for more flower centerpiece ideas.

Red Apples

Bowl Of Apples

Who said a centerpiece can’t be edible?

I’m always surprised by the number of apples we eat during the Rosh Hashanah Seder. Once the dipping gets going, you can’t stop it!

So instead of running back and forth to the kitchen for a re-fill, stock up a ton of red apples in a big bowl and use it as your main centerpiece.

Tip: Make sure to pick ripe and juicy apples!

Apples & Flower Centerpiece

Apple Flower Centerpiece

Flowers or apples? Apples or flowers?

Why pick one when you can have both?

Place a beautiful flower centerpiece and sprinkle some apples around it for décor (and eating).

Tip: You can also put a flower on each plate (see example above)

Apple Coating Station

Caramel Apples
Original image by photogmateo

Most Rosh Hashanah centerpieces are decorative.

Sure, we dip apples in honey on Rosh Hashanah.

But why leave it at that? Why not dip the apples in honey, AND in chocolate chips, AND in coconut, AND in [fill in the blank]?

That’s right: you can turn your centerpiece into an apple coating station and watch your guests dip, coat and enjoy the most delicious (and probably the only) Rosh Hashanah centerpiece they ever tasted!

Tip: Careful not to serve any dairy dips during Rosh Hashanah dinner. Dinner usually involves meat… And in Judaism – meat and dairy don’t play well together.

Pomegranates

Pomegranates Oranges

Pomegranates are a staple in every Rosh Hashanah table.

But unfortunately, pomegranates play a “minor” role in most Rosh Hashanah dinner tables… even though they’re considered a symbol of abundance in Jewish tradition.

What gives, right?

I think it’s time we give pomegranates a promotion…

Instead of merely adding a few pomegranates (or worse, pomegranates seeds) to the table – fill up a fruit bowl with pomegranates and place them right at the center of the table!

If pomegranates are a sign of abundance – let’s make them abundant!

Tip: Add other types of fruit to the bowl for a more appealing centerpiece. Stick to colorful fruits that complement the pomegranate’s red color; fruits like oranges, grapes, kiwis, bananas, blueberries…

Rosh Hashanah Wall Decorations

Look around… what do you see?

Rosh Hashanah decorations go beyond the dinner table.

To really give your home a nice Jewish new year atmosphere – surround yourself with Rosh Hashanah decorations!

Shana Tova in Glitter Garland & Banner

Shana Tova In Glitter Garland & Banner

Welcome your guests with this lovely (handmade) Shana Tova banner!

Look! Look! The apples are smiling!

How do you like them apples?

Rosh Hashanah Shana Tova Garland

Rosh Hashanah Shana Tova Garland

This is another unique garland of the 10 Rosh Hashanah symbols.

Just like the previous one – this one is also handmade, with more “royal” colors: gold, bronze, ivory, and others…

A very cool Rosh Hashanah décor.

Dorit Judaica Stainless Steel Pomegranate Wall Hanging – House Blessing

Dorit Judaica Stainless Steel Pomegranate Wall Hanging

Not a garland this time.

This time – it’s a pomegranate wall hanging!

Notice how I said pomegranate wall hanging, as opposed to Rosh Hashanah wall hanging?

That’s because it’s a house blessing. And we want our home to blessed 24/7, 365… not just on Rosh Hashanah.

So while it happens to fit the Rosh Hashanah theme, you can (and should) leave it hanging all year long!

Note: That’s exactly why people often get it as a Jewish housewarming gift.

Rosh Hashanah Favors

Rosh Hashanah decorations are great and all.

The problem is – your guests can’t take them home with them. Well, technically they could… but if I’m not mistaken – that’s called “stealing”, no?

So, how about sending your guests home with a few precious souvenirs? That way, they’ll remember your lovely Rosh Hashanah dinner party even after the wine wears off.

That’s where these sweet Rosh Hashanah favors come into play (and when I say sweet, I mean it!)…

Rosh Hashanah Photo Booth Props

Rosh Hashanah Photo Booth Props
  1. Say “cheese”! (click)
  2. Say “apple & honey” while wearing Apple glasses and funny mustache!

Tell me: which of these sounds more exciting

It’s no contest! (besides… cheese? On a Rosh Hashanah meal? Oy vey!)

These photo booth props are the ultimate way to make your Rosh Hashanah dinner party stand out.

Unlike most party favors, when you use photo booth props – you’re giving your guests a different kind of souvenir: you’re giving them memories.

A few days, months, years from now – they’ll look back at those hilarious pictures they took at your party table and wish Rosh Hashana came more often.

Important: Taking photos during Rosh Hashanah is technically forbidden. If you or other guests observe the Jewish holiday laws, you may want to skip the photo booth props.

Rosh Hashanah Hand Made Honey Bee Lollipops

Rosh Hashanah Hand Made Honey Bee Lollipops

Lollipop, lollipop oh Lolli lollipop 🎵🎵🎵…

BZZZZZZ!

Hey! Mr. Bee! How dare you interrupt me in the middle of a song!

What’s a bee doing on a Rosh Hashanah table anyway?!

Well then, Mr. bee… prepare to be eaten!

These delicious Rosh Hashanah honey bee lollipops would liven up any Rosh Hashanah dinner table.

They’re cute, hand-made and buzzingly delicious!

The Chosen One Game

The Chosen One Game

Even though The Chosen One isn’t exactly a Rosh Hashanah favor, trust me – you’ll be doing the guests a favor if you introduce it to them after dinner (especially after everyone has had a few drinks).

The concept of the Chosen One Game is simple:

  1. Draw a “typical” Jewish question card
  2. Pair it with an “atypical”, Chutzpah-filled answer card
  3. Show everyone who’s the funniest, wittiest, “OMG-you’re-the-craziest” fella at the Rosh Hashanah table.

The one causing the most drinks to come out of people’s noses – wins!

Care for an example? Behold:

Chosen One Game Example

So while it’s not technically a favor – trust me, you’ll be doing everyone a favor if you all play The Choen One together.

Did You Know?

The Chosen One donates 10% of its profits to Jewish non-profits and charities. So the moment you get The Chosen One Game, you simultaneously make your first Tzedakah contribution for the new year.

UPDATE: I convinced The Chosen One folks to give Amen V’Amen readers a special $5 discount (that’s almost 14% off)! Use the coupon code AMEN at checkout.

Conclusion

Rosh Hashanah isn’t a typical holiday.

  1. On the one hand – it’s the day of judgment. Jews are judged for their deeds (and misdeeds) in the passing year.
  2. On the other hand – it’s a day of celebration: We get together to celebrate the new year, drink lots of wine and dip apples in honey.

This duality is a common theme in Judaism: there’s no light without darkness, and there’s no darkness without light.

The same is true when you decorate your home for Rosh Hashanah: your decorations should be fun and cheerful on the one hand, yet serious and spiritual on the other.

The result: a warm, peaceful Rosh Hashanah atmosphere for our guests and loved ones. (the little ones still need their Rosh Hashanah gifts though… they don’t care about warm and peaceful 🙂 )
